Knowledge Workshop: Climate Change and Locally Led Adaptation in Bangladesh
GCA in collaboration with BPATC, the Centre for Participatory Research and Development (CPRD) and the Institute of Housing and Urban Development (IHS), is organizing an introductory knowledge workshop titled “Climate Change and Locally Led Adaptation in Bangladesh” for BPATC faculty
Event description
The impacts of climate change will cascade through key economic sectors in Bangladesh. Effective adaptation responses therefore need to be embedded in activities across all climate-vulnerable sectors, with a focus on limiting impacts on the most vulnerable. Recognizing this, Bangladesh’s National Adaptation Plan 2023-2050 (NAP) highlights the importance of integrating locally led adaptation (LLA) approaches across different sectors. However, implementing this objective is proving to be a challenge in sectors where public administrators are not familiar with climate change, or with integrating inclusive adaptation responses into their sectoral activities.
Public administrators in Bangladesh hold responsibility for different climate-vulnerable sectors at different points of their career, and at different levels. Training them on addressing climate change impacts through inclusive locally led approaches will therefore help in integrating locally led adaptation approaches across sectors.
Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre (BPATC) is an apex public sector training institute mandated by the Government of Bangladesh to build capacity of and provide bespoke training to civil servants at all levels of the government. Public administrators associated with different government ministries and departments are required to participate in difference courses offered by BPATC throughout the year
In line with LLA Principle 4, the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) recognizes the importance of investing in local capabilities to leave an institutional legacy. GCA therefore aims to work with BPATC to embed a training module on adaptation and LLA into their curriculum, and thereby help deliver institutionalized training on LLA to civil servants across all levels and all critical sectors for climate change.
