In September 2020, the Global Center on Adaptation’s South Asia Regional Office was inaugurated by H.E. Sheikh Hasina, Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh; H.E. Sheikh Hasina called on the GCA to promote the sharing of the experiences of Bangladesh, and of other countries, on building the climate resilience of most vulnerable communities.

In response, the GCA launched a Global Hub on Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) in the Dhaka office, to serve as a global center of excellence on supporting local communities to lead on adaptation. The Government of Bangladesh, which hosts the GCA Regional Office and the Global Hub on LLA, is a key strategic partner in this effort. The GCA has been collaborating with the MoEFCC to conceptualize the activities of the Global Hub on LLA, in addition to consultations with LLA practitioners in Bangladesh and around the world.

The activities of the Hub are guided by the eight Principles for Locally Led Adaptation, launched at the 2021 Climate Adaptation Summit, and endorsed by over 80 national governments, and national and global organizations.

The activities of the Global Hub on LLA were launched on 11th December 2022 by H.E. Sheikh Hasina, Honorable Prime Minister of Bangladesh, with kind support from UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), in an event co-hosted by the Government of Bangladesh.
