otterdam, The Netherlands, 3 June 2022 – Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) CEO Prof. Dr. Patrick Verkooijen welcomed H.E. Basuki Hadimuljono, Minister of Public Works and Housing of Indonesia to GCA’s Floating Office Rotterdam for a high-level bilateral meeting to discuss cooperation between GCA and the Republic of Indonesia.
Prof. Dr. Verkooijen and Minister Hadimuljono discussed the expansion of GCA’s work into Southeast Asia, where GCA will look to replicate the impact being achieved through its work with partners in Africa with its flagship Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) and is initiating through South Asia through its regional office in Bangladesh. Given the Minister’s portfolio, there was particular discussion on GCA’s Infrastructure and Nature-Based Solutions and Water and Urban programs.
Collaboration between GCA and Indonesia is timely because Indonesia is vulnerable to climate change impacts, including extreme events such as floods and droughts, and long-term changes from sea level rise, shifts in rainfall patterns and increasing temperature. Indonesia is also in a prime position to drive forward the adaptation agenda through its current Presidency of the G20. On this basis, Prof. Dr. Verkooijen and Minister Hadimuljono agreed to actively ramp up cooperation between GCA and Indonesia.
Minister Hadimuljono was accompanied by H.E. Mayerfas, Ambassador of the Republic of Indonesia to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, as well as a trade delegation of 20 people.
