The GCA hosts workshop for West African Coastal Areas programme

On February 21-22, the Global Center on Adaptation hosted a workshop to discuss the “Knowledge Pillar” of the West African Coastal Areas programme, a World Bank investment initiative also known as WACA. WACA aims to counter erosion, pollution and flooding in (currently) eight countries along the West-African coast.  The Global Center on Adaptation is leading the Knowledge Pillar of WACA to transfer state of the adaptation knowledge to West Africa.

T he workshop in Rotterdam brought together representatives from various donors and knowledge Institutes, including Deltares, IHE Delft, L’Institut de Recherché pour le Developpement, the Red Cross/Red Crescent Clime Centre and the World Bank.

The workshop discussed a work plan for the first year of the Knowledge Pillar. This includes knowledge transfer activities such as study tours to India and the Netherlands and institutional assessments of key West-African organizations, such as the University of Cape Coast. In addition, the workshop discussed the governance structure of the Knowledge Pillar, which should reflect the necessary local ownership and external expertise that is required.

The proposed work plan will be finalized during a follow up meeting in March when steps towards implementation and action will be discussed.
