Global Center on Adaptation to Disseminate Climate Information Services Throughout the Sahel to Help Tackle Food Insecurity

otterdam, the Netherlands, 12 January 2023 – The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) today announced its collaboration with the African Development Bank to build resilience to climate change to tackle food and nutrition insecurity in the Sahel. The work will initially be focused in Burkina Faso, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Togo and to some extent in the remaining member-countries of the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILLS) – Benin, Chad, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau and Mauritania. The work is part of GCA’s support to the second phase of the investment project of the African Development Bank Programme to Build Resilience to Food and Nutrition Insecurity in the Sahel (P2-P2RS) under the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP).
Across the region, the number of people suffering from chronic food and nutrition insecurity, poverty, and the effects of climate change continues to increase. By making sustained long-term investments in building household resilience, the cost of emergency assistance can be significantly reduced, and ultimately the cycle of recurring famines will be broken. P2-P2RS is expected to ultimately reduce the prevalence of acute malnutrition to 11% and improve the living conditions of over three million people, 51% of them women.
At the regional level, GCA will focus on the dissemination of climate information services particularly through the promotion of Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) for the sustainable production of hydro-climatic information and services, with the potential to promote the creation of jobs for young people.
Nationally, GCA will support Niger to organize a regional fair on good practices and technological innovations (including digital) for adaptation, mitigation and resilience to climate change. This will facilitate the promotion and extension of climate-smart practices and technologies, and climate information via digital solutions at the village level. The findings will be used to draw up a feasibility assessment of digital readiness for the deployment of adaptation solutions and identification of entry points for using digital solutions. It is planned that this work will later be extended to the Gambia.
