R otterdam, Nairobi, 21 September 2023 – The President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has accepted an invitation from Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chairman of the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) to become a member of the Advisory Board of GCA following their meeting on the sidelines of the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi, Kenya.

Ban Ki-moon, 8th Secretary-General of the United Nations and Chairman of the Global Center on Adaptation commended the President of Tazania’s work on climate adaptation to date:

“President Samia has long been a leader in efforts to deal with climate change in Africa and around the world and we look forward to benefitting from her experience as we continue to build on the Bridgetown Initiative to transform the level of adaptation finance for Africa.”

Tanzania is one of the first countries in Africa to draw up an Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) Country Compact – an investment roadmap that outlines adaptation investment priorities, financing needs, and finance mobilization strategies for implementing climate adaptation measures. Such Compacts mark a critical milestone as countries aim to secure concrete outcomes at COP28 in December.

Commenting on the launch of Tanzania’s Compact, Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania said:

“The total cost for our AAAP Climate Adaptation Compact is US$9.9 billion in the coming three years. My government is ready to work with you in asking for these funds from various sectors – the private sector, international community – we are ready to work with you.”

Professor Patrick Verkooijen, CEO of the Global Center on Adaptation said:

“President Samia has been a strong advocate for AAAP, the world’s most ambitious adaptation plan. We have to deliver action on the ground further and faster and I look forward to working closely with the President as our newest Board member to ensure African countries get the finance they need to make this happen.”
