I n the BBC News interview, GCA CEO Prof. Patrick Verkooijen emphasized the need to rethink the Paris Agreement’s framework in light of escalating climate impacts. He stressed that while the Agreement has been instrumental in shaping global climate action, it’s crucial to pivot from a mitigation-heavy focus to one that integrates adaptation more fully. Prof. Verkooijen argued that as the world moves toward COP29, there must be a greater emphasis on climate resilience, particularly for the most vulnerable communities.

He outlined how the upcoming COP29 summit provides a critical opportunity to advance global adaptation efforts, highlighting that adaptation must be scaled up to match the growing climate risks. His vision for “reimagining” the Paris Agreement centers on a more balanced approach, ensuring that adaptation and mitigation receive equal attention and funding.

Prof. Verkooijen also discussed GCA’s role in leading global adaptation efforts, calling for increased investment in adaptation solutions that support economic resilience, especially in regions like Africa and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). As expectations for COP29 grow, he stressed that the world must transition from pledges to tangible, on-the-ground actions that protect livelihoods and foster long-term sustainability.
