Government Consultation on Adaptation Education
Consultation on Adaptation Education
On the sidelines of Bonn Climate Change Conference 2025, the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) will organize a consultation on ‘Adaptation Education’. This meeting will bring together governments, civil society organizations, and other development partners to collect technical input in preparation for the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program 2.0 (2026 to 2030).
Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program 2.0
As the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) scales action across sectors, there is a critical opportunity to integrate education as both a frontline service requiring protection and a strategic lever to accelerate climate resilience. GCA is engaging in a series of consultations to test and shape two potential pathways to mainstream education within the AAAP:
1.Climate Proofing Education Services
Climate shocks are increasingly disrupting access to education across Africa. Through its work with international financial institutions (IFIs), AAAP is already helping to climate proof investments in infrastructure, cities, and other sectors. This model can be extended to the education sector by embedding adaptation measures in school infrastructure, ensuring continuity of learning during climate crises, and enabling governments to rapidly restore
2. Driving Public Awareness and Adaptation Literacy
Education also plays a catalytic role in building long-term climate resilience. AAAP’s technical work, including adaptation diagnostics, risk metrics, and policy insights, can provide rich content for curriculum development, educator training, and learning tools. Translating this knowledge into accessible and context-relevant products can help mainstream adaptation literacy across formal and informal education systems and foster a more climate-aware generation.
Objectives
- Test the relevance of these GCA’s two proposed interventions on adaptation education.
- Collect inputs for the design of AAAP 2.0 (2026 to 2030) to ensure education is embedded more intentionally as a driver of climate adaptation.
Methodology
Participants will be invited to make 3-minutes interventions addressing the questions below:
- What are the challenges Governments are facing to implement adaptation education?
- Are the GCA’s two proposed interventions on education relevant?
- What are the gaps and needs to scale up adaptation education in Africa?
- What are the key interventions and who should be the key target group?
