The South Sudan Sustainable Agriculture Development Project
Adaptation Need
The agriculture sector in South Sudan is facing increasing climate risks—including erratic rainfall, floods, and prolonged dry spells—that undermine agricultural productivity and food security. These climate–induced challenges are particularly severe for smallholder farmers engaged in crops, livestock, and fisheries value chains. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive climate vulnerability assessments, scaling of proven climate adaptation technologies—including advisory and extension tools—and targeted training, particularly for women and youth, in climate-resilient agricultural practices.
GCA’s Added Value
GCA’s support for South Sudan’s SADEP project focuses on strengthening climate resilience in the agricultural value chains through comprehensive climate risk and vulnerability assessments, analysis of climate-resilient seed systems, and support for the digitalization of seed production and supply. In collaboration with CGAIRs – IITA, CIAT, ICRISAT and CIMMYT, GCA’s technical support focuses on co-designing and scaling gender responsive digital advisory platforms and tools like iSAT and RiceAdvise, enhancing early warning systems, and strengthening extension systems to deliver and utilize tailored climate adaptation solutions.

Project goals
Mainstreaming Adaptation and Resilience
To enhance agricultural resilience, GCA’s interventions within the SADEP project include conducting comprehensive climate risk and vulnerability assessments to identify suitable locations for targeted adaptation along the value chains, assessing the resilience of local seed systems, identifying barriers to the adoption of climate-resilient seeds, and providing recommendations to advance digitalization in seed production and commercialization. GCA also supports the co-design and deployment of digital advisory platforms to promote climate-smart practices, facilitate early warning systems, and strengthen extension services’ capacity to deliver tailored climate advice.
Expected Project Outcomes
- Enhanced national extension advisory services with integrated DCAS on early warning systems
- Increased production and productivity of selected value chains through resilient infrastructures, technologies and practices.
- Increased incomes from improved access to markets and quality of produce available in the markets
- Strengthened institutional and policy frameworks for effective value chain promotion and rural sector coordination.
