Ghana Tree Crop Diversification Project

The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), in partnership with the World Bank Group (WBG) through the African Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), is supporting the Ghana Tree Crops Diversification Project (TCDP) to improve climate, economic, and social resilience in selected tree crop value chains—cocoa, cashew, coconut, and rubber—in Ghana. The project focuses on strengthening institutional and value chain governance, improving productivity and climate resilience, and enhancing support for post-harvest management, processing, value addition, and market access.

Adaptation Need

The tree crop sector sustains rural livelihoods and foreign exchange earnings. However, erratic rainfall, rising temperatures, and humidity-driven pests are shrinking production zones and reducing yields. Cocoa yield is sensitive to moisture levels and temperature fluctuations, which are critical for maintaining growth and optimal productivity. Drought stress and irregular rainfall lead to reduced yields, lower bean quality, and increased vulnerability to pests and diseases. For instance, in the 2023/2024 season, climate pressures contributed significantly to a 37.5% yield reduction, resulting in the lowest cocoa production output in two decades. This led to a delayed delivery of 370,000 metric tons and a default on an $800 million syndicated loan secured to finance cocoa purchases by the country. Implementing climate-smart practices and adaptive management strategies is crucial for sustaining production and protecting the livelihoods of farmers in cocoa and other vital tree crop value chains.

GCA’s Added Value

GCA, in collaboration with the CGIAR Center, Alliance Bioversity-CIAT, is strengthening the project’s climate resilience by providing risk and vulnerability analytics that support decision-making; mapping the agro-advisory landscape and co-designing a climate-smart digital extension framework, prioritizing and valuing adaptation options for e-extension roll-out, and building local capacity to deliver these climate-resilient services across all project areas.

Project goals

Mainstreaming Adaptation and Resilience

To enhance climate resilience of tree crops production systems, GCA’s support integrated adaptation measures such as utilization of improved, climate-resilient planting materials techniques, digital advisory systems that combine weather forecasts, early warning services, and agro-advisory information. These adaptation measures are crucial for protecting farmers and tree crop communities from climate shocks, enhancing their livelihoods, and overall resilience.

Expected Outcomes

Outcomes of GCA’s support include:

  • Enhanced tree crops yield: contributing to crops yield targets of —41% overall (cocoa +70 %, cashew +30 %, coconut +40 %, rubber +25 %).
  • Increased access to e-extension through a functional Content Management System (CMS)—for 10,000 cocoa farmers.
  • Expanded tree crop land area under sustainable landscape management system and with digital traceability—92,000 Hectares.
  • Increased climate-resilient target tree varieties identified—at least 12 varieties across ecozones in Ghana.
