After more than three decades of civil war, Somalia faces overlapping challenges of fragility and weak governance, conflict, and rapidly intensifying climate impacts. Currently, more people are displaced in Somalia by climate than by conflict. Additionally, many urban residents live in informal settlements with poor services, insecure tenure, and heightened exposure to floods and wildfires.
The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) facilitated the development of an Urban Climate Resilience Masterclass (UCRMC) to build institutional capacity to design and implement climate-resilient urban investments in line with the World Bank’s Urban Resilience Program II (SURP II) project. The development of the masterclass built off previous UCMRCs delivered in Kenya and Bangladesh, and was co-created in close partnership with municipal officials and the World Bank task team to ensure it was tailored to the specific needs of Somalia. The UCRMC Trainer Handbook has been designed for anyone delivering the resilience training and is a support guide that leads the trainer through the material, module by module, and offers guidance for effective facilitation.
