B angladesh is a country with a population of around 163 million. 36% of this population reside in urban areas. This number is expected to increase to 60% by 2050. Rapid urban growth comes with many challenges. The needs of the burgeoning population have fast outpaced the availability of land, infrastructure and services. Climate change impacts also threaten Bangladesh. Floods and disasters frequently ravage the country’s 329 municipalities or pourashavas.

The Asian Development Bank(ADB), with support from Agence Francaise de Development and the Japan Fund for Prosperous and Resilient Asia and the Pacific, is supporting the government in implementing results-based lending for the Improving Urban Governance and Infrastructure Program in Bangladesh. The Global Center on Adaptation is working with ADB to strengthen the capacity of municipal officials, policymakers, practitioners and experts, through the Urban Climate Resilience Masterclass, a handbook for climate-informed urban master planning and a compendium of nature-based solutions for urban resilience.
