Dissemination of Final Findings for the Abidjan-Lagos Corridor Highway Project
Technical Review and Validation Workshop
The session, held at the request of AfDB and ECOWAS, aimed to secure further stakeholder buy-in for the project’s climate adaptation work. During the presentation, the team shared findings from the climate hazards and risk analysis, outlined prioritised adaptation options, and presented key technical outputs. These materials will also support the project’s stakeholders in preparing applications for green financing.
Event description
The Abidjan to Lagos Corridor is a key economic artery, facilitating 75% of regional trade through integrated transport and logistics infrastructure. It is anticipated that the road corridor will enhance connectivity while reducing trade costs and will therefore unlock economic opportunities for the ECOWAS region. By 2050, a 40% increase in maximum daily rainfall is projected under high-emission scenarios, raising the risk of infrastructure damage. Without adaptation, hazards are expected to cost as much as 267 million USD per annum to the corridor by 2075. To address this, GCA has proposed high-impact adaptation measures—including an increase in the capacity of river crossings, concrete resurfacing and planting indigenous plants that will reduce erosion—, while also mitigating cascading effects on freight exports and loss in productivity of labour in production.
In Q3-Q4 2025, GCA is planning to organise the Masterclass on Climate Resilient Infrastructure PPPs in collaboration with AAAP Secretariat, AfDB, ECOWAS and local partners in the project’s five countries.
