GCA Statement on COP30

T he outcome of COP30 marks an important step forward to sustain momentum for global adaptation efforts. The decision to triple adaptation finance is a meaningful advance that will help drive the resilience revolution already taking hold across developing countries. While COP30 could not close the wide gap in climate action as the world moves closer to breaching the 1.5°C threshold, it nonetheless reaffirmed a strong collective commitment to work together through multilateral cooperation, to be sustained through the global Mutirão adopted in Belém.

Meaningful progress was made on the global goal on adaptation, and the GCA looks forward to supporting countries as they advance and refine the indicator framework, which took a significant stride forward in Belém. Community-focused adaptation efforts and the global youth movement also gained vital momentum at the Amazon COP. GCA was pleased to help host and present findings from one of the largest ever global youth consultations on national adaptation policies and to honor outstanding locally led adaptation initiatives through GCA’s LLA Awards.

COP30 demonstrated a growing focus among international financial institutions to integrate climate resilience into development finance—an important shift that reinforces resilience-building efforts such as the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), championed by the African Union Commission, the African Development Bank, and GCA. The COP30 Action Agenda reflects these priorities with the AAAP identified as an important climate adaptation solution of the Action Agenda, offering a crucial pathway to embed resilience across national systems in Africa, the world’s most climate-vulnerable region.

We congratulate Brazil on successfully concluding COP30, and welcome Türkiye as host of the next conference and Australia as president of the negotiations, alongside the Pacific Islands’ leadership in convening the next pre-COP for communities on the frontlines where urgent progress on adaptation remains essential. Likewise, GCA congratulates Ethiopia on being selected as the host of COP32 following on from its hosting of the second Africa Climate Summit in September of this year.
