Event description

While GCA’s activities in agriculture and food security sector has been carried out mainly in Africa, GCA is keen to expand its Program activities to promote climate adaptation in the food security into Bangladesh in particular, and Asia in general.  As GCA recognizes the longstanding efforts by the public sector and various local and national organizations to improve food security and implement climate adaptation solutions in the agricultural sector, an understanding of the current and trend of the situation on food security in the country is important to identify appropriate entry points for GCA.

GCA Food Security Program has initiated a scoping work on the state of the past, present, and future contributions to climate adaptation of the agriculture sector and the donor-funded ecosystem of Bangladesh. The service provider conducting the study has reviewed available information, gaps, and trends on food security in Bangladesh, key players, their priorities and, opportunities for synergies to help make informed decision on the strategic priorities, entry points and role that GCA can play to improve climate adaptation in a gender responsive approach in Bangladesh’s agricultural sector. Special attention has been placed on research extension and adoption linkages on seed systems and stress-tolerant varieties. The study provides insights into the level of farmer adoption, successes, and challenges to scaling up of seeds generated from research organizations particularly those from the CGIAR and other national agricultural research centers.

As part of the scoping study, GCA organizes a validation and stakeholder consultative workshop on climate adaptation in Bangladesh to engage governmental agencies, private and NGO stakeholders, research institutions, women-led organizations, community-based organizations, and other relevant stakeholders involved in the Resilient Food System in Bangladesh. The workshop’s objectives will be to discuss the findings of the study and current state of the sector—remaining challenges, successful approaches, climate sector-specific concerns, and entry points for GCA.
