GCA Convenes over 20 Governments to Turbocharge Climate Resilience Momentum Ahead of UNGA and COP30

N ew York, United States of America, 26 June 2025 – The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) convened a high-level Ambassadorial meeting in New York today where Permanent Representatives and Ambassadors and their representatives of over 20 governments to the United Nations gathered for a dialogue on strengthening multilateral cooperation for building climate resilience. The event marked the first in a series of Leaders’ Dialogues held ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September and the COP30 Summit in Belém, Brazil, in November 2025.

“Climate adaptation was—and remains—indispensable to global prosperity and global security,” said Professor Patrick V. Verkooijen, President and CEO of GCA. “In this new world order, where climate risks transcend borders and exploit existing vulnerabilities, accelerating adaptation action at speed and scale is not just an option—it is a necessity. I welcome the opportunity for discussion and look forward to working closely with all partners to turbocharge adaptation and sustain strong momentum through to COP30.”

Participants explored ways to mainstream adaptation into development finance, shared policy innovations and discussed cooperation across regions to build on the success of GCA’s flagship Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP). AAAP is on track to mobilize nearly $25 billion in adaptation-focused investments across more than 40 African countries by the end of 2025.

The GCA Leaders’ Dialogues unite heads of state and government, development banks, and private-sector champions to double down on adaptation finance, innovation and implementation to ensure the international community harnesses the full potential of multilateral systems to safeguard people, economies and ecosystems from the accelerating climate crisis.
