‘I fear people will go to war over water’: as wells run dry, farmers struggle to survive in Bangladesh
This article from the Guardian highlights emerging evidence that north-west Bangladesh’s Barind region is approaching a critical groundwater tipping point. It cites a recent study led by BRAC in collaboration with the Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), which found that rising temperatures, declining rainfall and the expansion of water-intensive boro rice cultivation are accelerating groundwater depletion and could push the region into severe water stress within the next two decades. The article presents this research as underpinning efforts to promote climate-resilient agriculture, more efficient irrigation practices and community-led water management solutions in vulnerable farming communities.
