To further identify sustainable measures for building resilience in Tanzania through the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program’s pillars of focus, an adaptation-focused technical deep dive will be conducted at COP28.

Event description

The United Republic of Tanzania has identified nine sectors as most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Some of these sectors contribute significantly to the GDP of the country and make up a strong proportion of its foreign currency earnings. As a result, Tanzania has undertaken various measures to enhance adaptation across these sectors including setting out various regulatory and policy frameworks such as a National Environment Policy and a National Adaptation Program of Action, among others.

To support these adaptation-enhancing measures put in place by Tanzania, the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP) Upstream Financing Facility has commenced mainstreaming adaptation into Multilateral Development Bank investments in the sectors of water resource management and agriculture and is supporting overall resource mobilization efforts by providing a clear platform for its investment needs.

Specifically, in water resource management, the AAAP is working with the African Development Bank to strengthen the resilience of communities in the Zambezi Watercourse. This entails measures such as integrating digital technologies into agricultural practice to enhance productivity, supporting the increased access of early warning systems to communities, and other disaster-related measures.

In a bid to further strengthen Tanzania’s climate change adaptation needs, the AAAP has also developed a first-phase climate adaptation country compact which provides a concerted solid foundation for decision-making, resource allocation, and greater investments in adaptation projects and programs. This Compact has outlined opportunities for adaptation investments at the sectoral level as well as existing adaptation projects with the potential to be scaled up with adequate funding.

To identify further sustainable measures for building resilience in Tanzania through the AAAP’s pillars of focus, an adaptation-focused technical deep dive will be conducted at COP28.

Objectives
This event will provide the platform to exchange further opportunities to strengthen climate adaptation investments in the region and country. This will entail:

  • Sharing key results of the AAAP’s investments in East Africa and Tanzania and how this is enhancing its resilience to climate change
  • Providing a platform for donors and development partners, to assess the opportunities for support to climate resilience for  East Africa and Tanzania through the AAAP
  • Providing a platform for multilateral, national development banks, and International financial institutions to identify collaboration opportunities on the AAAP to strengthen Climate Resilience for Tanzania
  • Providing the platform for other countries within the sub-region, to learn of the AAAP modality and how this can also support their countries in building adaptation resilience.

The outcomes of the dialogue would be captured into a summary document and roadmap for collaboration with Tanzania on the AAAP going forward.
