Launch of 2023 Stories of Resilience: Local Adaptation in Practice
The 2023 Stories of Resilience publication was launched at COP28, highlighting best practices and learning from locally led adaptation efforts, to advance learning and to inspire and inform efforts across the globe
Event description
In December 2022, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh. H.E. Sheikh Hasina, inaugurated the GCA’s Global Hub on Locally Led Adaptation (LLA), which aims to promote LLA at scale, with speed, to reduce climate risks for populations and sections of society that are most vulnerable to climate change. The activities of the Hub are guided by the eight Principles for Locally Led Adaptation, launched at the 2021 Climate Adaptation Summit.
The GCA initiated an annual series on LLA in 2022 that aims to reflect best practices and learning from locally led adaptation efforts, to advance learning on LLA, and to inspire and inform LLA efforts elsewhere. The series is targeted at local and global adaptation practitioners, national and sub-national governments, and funders of adaptation action. The series also aims to draw out lessons from local implementation for national and global policymaking; and to point to ways of making adaptation more effective on the ground.
The 2022 publication, Stories of Resilience – Lessons from Local Adaptation Practice, was produced in collaboration with the Independent University of Bangladesh, reflecting analysis of work presented at the 2022 Gobeshona Conference, and launched at COP27.
In 2023, GCA partnered with South-South North (SSN) and Climate and Development Knowledge Network (CDKN). A call for stories was published earlier this year, and more than 200 stories were proposed in response. A shortlist was prepared with support from an Advisory Committee, including the late Prof. Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director, International Centre for Climate Change and Development, and Shuchi Vora, Resilience Knowledge Coalition Lead, Global Resilience Partnership (GRP).
The 2023 Stories of Resilience publication was launched during the inaugural session of the Regional Hubs of the Resilience Hub.

In this year’s Stories of Resilience, we bring you a crucial message from communities implementing adaptation on the ground: global and national systems are not changing fast enough in response to urgent local adaptation needs.
Stories of Resilience: Lessons from Local Adaptation Practice
The stories in this compilation, based on the sessions of the 2022 Gobeshona Conference on Locally Led Adaptation, are an important basis for us to understand the difference between local action and locally led action, and to identify effective ways of supporting local leadership.
