Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue on Climate Risks and Adaptation Investments for the Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway Project

Nairobi, Kenya

16 April 2024, 9:00 East Africa Time

Event description

The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA), in partnership with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), is convening a Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue focused on climate risks and adaptation investments for the Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway project. The dialogue will bring together a wide range of stakeholders to collaboratively discuss climate-related risks and adaptation solutions for this nationally significant infrastructure investment.

Context
The Nairobi–Mombasa Expressway is a flagship Public-Private Partnership (PPP) connecting two of the largest economic hubs of Kenya. It is poised to significantly bolster intra-African trade, drive economic growth, and boost employment and business opportunities. As one of the largest infrastructure PPPs in Africa, it represents a crucial opportunity to structure and embed adaptation and resilience from the outset.

Through GCA’s technical assistance, KeNHA is addressing key climate vulnerabilities by incorporating comprehensive climate risk assessments, identifying cost-effective adaptation measures, and developing a climate-resilient PPP contract. This activity is being developed under the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP), a flagship program launched by the African Development Bank and GCA, to mobilize $25 billion in investments in resilient infrastructure by 2025.

This multi stakeholder dialogue has been convened to present the findings from the climate risk assessment, discuss the impacts and vulnerabilities of climate risk to the project and socioeconomic activities along the NME corridor, and identify opportunities to strategically respond to these risks through prioritized adaptation investment options.
