Namibia Water Sector Infrastructure Support Program Phase II
The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) supported the African Development Bank’s preparation of the second phase of the Namibia Water Sector Infrastructure Support Program (NWSISPII). The program aims to strengthen water security in Namibia by upgrading, expanding, rehabilitating, and developing climate-resilient water supply infrastructure to improve access, quality, and sustainability of water and sanitation services, while supporting more effective management of water facilities.
GCA’s support focused on strengthening the climate resilience of planned investments through climate risk and vulnerability analysis in the program area and the wider Cunene River basin. This included guidance for the climate-resilient design and siting of bulk water infrastructure, water distribution systems, groundwater schemes, and sanitation facilities. GCA also assessed gender-differentiated climate vulnerabilities and supported the integration of inclusive planning approaches through a Gender Action Plan.
In addition, GCA identified adaptation priorities to improve the resilience of water assets through community-based approaches, landscape management practices, and nature-based solutions. This support helps ensure that adaptation measures are embedded in infrastructure planning and design, contributing to more sustainable and secure water supply systems in one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
