Global Center on Adaptation to Enhance Resilience of Livestock Value Chains in Senegal
R
otterdam, the Netherlands, 12 January 2023 – The Global Center on Adaptation (GCA) today announced it will provide technical assistance to the design and implementation of the Integrated National Livestock Development Program in Senegal (PNDIES) financed by the African Development Bank as part of the Climate-Smart Digital Technologies for Agriculture and Food Security Pillar of the Africa Adaptation Acceleration Program (AAAP).
PNDIES is working to develop competitive, climate-resilient livestock value chains (including for agriculture) in Senegal that can generate employment, particularly for young people and women, while also contributing to strengthening Senegal’s food sovereignty. In May 2022 President Macky Sall and GCA CEO Professor Patrick Verkooijen, joined forces to unlock US$1 billion in climate finance for Senegal.
Livestock farming is practiced by one in three households in Senegal and is an important part of the economy, contributing to 3.4% of the country’s GDP. But the sector faces numerous challenges including low productivity, lack of competitiveness, climate change, low capacity of producer organizations, and a lack of technical skills.
GCA will support the project by assessing climatic risks to the livestock sector and providing an analysis of the climatic vulnerability of the value chains to enable the identification of strategic options for the integration of digital climate-smart advisory services (DCAS) and climate-resilient agriculture options to respond to challenges in the face of climate change.
Through technical advisory studies, capacity building and multi-stakeholder events, GCA’s support will include:
- A detailed analysis to assess climatic risks to livestock value chains – dairy, beef, poultry in Senegal
- An analysis of the digital climate adaptation solutions that are applicable to the livestock sector, and their potential for uptake, in Senegal
- An assessment of the opportunities, constraints and conditions to facilitate investment in digital tools for adaptation in the livestock sector, including tools to provide more personalized advisory services to livestock farmers, and to receive information from end users
- Training sessions on designing, implementing and using DCAS for stakeholders to strengthen their capacity to implement digital adaptation solutions in the country, and for improved resilience to climate change
It is expected that PNDIES will result in a sustainable increase in livestock productivity and production in Senegal; improved household income for agro-pastoralists participating in the project; increased update of climate resilient and DCAS tools in project areas; improved household nutrition in project areas; and adaptation related employment for young people and women.
