Climate-Resilient Rail Development and Catchment Level Risk Reduction:
Tanzania’s Central Rail Corridor
GCA, through the African Acceleration Adaptation Program (AAAP), provided technical assistance to the WBG and the Tanzania Railway Corporation (TRC) delivering climate risk and vulnerability assessment across the 970 km Dar es Salaam-Isaka corridor, with high-resolution diagnostics for the 120 km KilosaGulwe- Igandu hotspot. The analysis combined climate modelling and geospatial hazard mapping to identify exposure to extreme rainfall, flooding, sedimentation, landslides, and extreme heat. This was complemented by detailed hydrological and hydraulic modelling of the Kinyasungwe River system to quantify flood depths, flow velocities, and overtopping points, and to estimate how flood frequency and severity could change under future climate scenarios. The modelling confirmed that disruption days could rise beyond 200 per year (up from around 120 days in 2024) in the absence of adaptation, reinforcing the urgency of resilience investments.
This exemplar demonstrate how climate resilience has been successfully integrated into the project, highlighting measurable results, innovative approaches, and models that can be replicated and scaled.
