Climate information, water management
and local adaptation decision-making
Climate information can support farmers’ adaptation decisions when it addresses the choices they face and is backed by practical support. This brief examines a pilot initiative in Bangladesh’s water-stressed Barind region, delivered by GCA with BRAC, the International Water Management Institute and local partner Dascoh. The initiative combined climate and groundwater modelling with farmer training, exposure visits and demonstration activities to support water-efficient farming, alternative crops and livelihood diversification.
The experience underlines the need to tailor climate information to different users and planning horizons. Farmers need advice relevant to upcoming seasons and investment decisions, while supporting institutions can use longer-term projections to guide their programmes. Information alone is insufficient: adopting new practices also requires technical assistance, market connections and coordination with water management authorities. The brief recommends longer implementation periods aligned with agricultural seasons, stronger training for field staff and sustained support through established services such as BRAC’s Adaptation Clinics.
